Mama i Tajo

Ivanka Franjevic remembers playing in the fields and climbing the trees near the stream with her two brothers and one sister. And even though they traveled from a republic to a republic quite often; changed homes and schools, they were all right, because they leaned on one another using the strong love and respect their parents had taught them. Iva (as everyone calls her today) was born in the capital city of Croatia, Zagreb, on 12 March 1957.

Thinking back to her childhood, Ivas’ eyes sparkle at a thought of baking full plate of pancakes as a surprise to her Mother Olga when she wakes up from her Sunday midday sleep. It was a pleasure to see Olga happy; as her life was hard work and little money. The hardest thing in Ivas’ life were deaths of her two brothers, father, girl and boy nephew. Most of all she misses her mother who died 1988 years ago – yet, it feels like she was here only days back. Ivanka loved her Mum deeply and respected her for the woman she was.

A short single life Iva lead was difficult as she worked from her fourteenth year. Young and beautiful she mesmerized Srecko, who fell head over hills. Her parents ofcourse love this young man from the first meeting. He was introduced by Ivas' cousin Dubravko. Small wedding ceremony was held on 15 June 1974.

Srecko Vujkov was also born in Zagreb, on 16 August 1950. He was raised by his Mother Desanka and shared his childhood with younger brother Borivoj. As a child Srecko didn’t appreciate the education much, but he managed to finish studies for KV mechanical fitter. After which he joined Titos’ Military at age 19. He served 17 months and recalls this time as good and enjoyable.

Srecko is a man of word and fairness. Throughout his life he showed that he will do anything for his family. As a young man who wanted to provide for his young wife the best he could, he accepted an offer to work in South Africa.

Ivanka and Srecko lived in South Africa for five years. They enjoyed life there, meeting many people who are their friends to this day. They travelled and experienced a little bit of a hippie-lifestyle living in flats, caravans and different houses.

1977 was the year they had an early Christmas present. Yup. They had me. Having a little one made Mama miss her family to the extend where the decision was made that they return to Croatia. 9 Hard years were ahead of them, but joy was never too far - Zoran was born in 1980. Mama often said that life was very difficult, but the joy was in us children. (it is nice to know this :))

Opportunity came along to move once again to South Africa and this was accepted immediately. New adventures bagan in 1989 when the four of us moved to South Africa - it was Zoran's first time.

Here, life was better. We all worked hard in our own way to succeed. Mama and Tajo equaly fought for what we had and earned us a good life. But time came when I became unsettled in RSA and made a definite decision to move out. Action was taken immediately by my parents and withing months they were in NZ - Waiting for Corne and me. Are the not AMAZiNG!?

Srecko contacts his mother on regular basis via telephone and Mama and He visit whenever possible - probably every 2 years or so. Tajo's brother was in a fatal traffic accident at age 47 - he will always be missed and remembered as a sweetheart. We will always love Uncle Boro.

In New Zealand, Ivanka and Srecko found their happiness and peace at last. Their life is most stable and successful then ever before.

Dreams come true to those who dare to dream.

Mama and Tajo are selling their last branch of Hot Roast Meals and plan to retire and enjoy their grandchildren ... ... Indescribable feelings awoke from the core of their being in 2003 when Lara was born. The feelings were re-enforced with Keanu's birth in 2005. They make sure to see the children as much as possible - sometimes 7 days a week. Love and happiness is shared with all members of family.

With all the family success, it will only be unfair of me not to mention that Iva and Srecko helped Family Brajkovic (Ivas’ Sister, her husband Bozidar; daughter Paulina, Beta and Zdenka with her husband Ivo), and Igor (Ivas’ nephew) to immigrate to New Zealand and stand on their feet. Zdenka and Ivo now have two sons: Dennis and Dorian (both cute as a button)

Iva and Srecko celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary on Bali – their first real happy honeymoon.(edited:19/01/2009)

I am proud to be a daughter of these two wonderful people who never gave up; never gave in to failure. They were determined and showed us through their actions and achievements that what you desire is reachable. We (the whole family) are a success because of my parents. Thans Mama. Thanks Tajo. I love you. (edited:19/01/2009)
